DW codes

If anyone wants to get a Dreamwidth account (as [personal profile] etfb says, just like LJ but not run by the Russian mafia), I have a batch of invite codes.

CIV Website

The CIV website is now live at http://civ.aicsa.org.au/. No online rego yet, I'm afraid, there are still some details to be worked out there. Soon, we hope.

Go sign this (if you're in the US)

I don't actually remember if there are any USians on my f-list, but if there are, go sign this.

Golden Compass review-in-synopsis

Saw it Thursday night. Better than expected in terms of violence-to-source, worse than expected in terms of quality of direction. Poor pacing made it feel kind of like a couple of hours of trailer.

Grumpy rants

Good god word processors suck.  They always, always end up in ad-hoc, screwed-up, inconsistent formatting for any large structured document.  And you can't even tell where the screwups are to fix them, because all the magical formatting tags are invisible.  Hate, hate, hate, hate, loathe and despise.

I'm not sure quite what's sucking amongst the X clipboard, gucharmap and emacs, but something in the mix means that although I can paste characters, as utf-8, into a terminal from gucharmap, when I paste into emacs they get turned into similar but different characters in emacs' internal encoding, which it is then incapable of encoding back into utf-8.

And the various cords on my desk keep getting tangled and caught.
